Goodbye to all the memories of Skype!

Skype is one of the pioneers in the world of digital communication. Ito ay isang software na ginawa para makipag-video call, voice call, at chat over the internet. It was launched in 2003 by a team of developers from Estonia, and later acquired by Microsoft in 2011. Bilang user, naaalala ko na first time ko ginamit ang Skype due to recommendations only. I had online friends back in 2008 through an app called Camfrog Video Chat. Our group was solid there; it was like a Yahoo Messenger with such rooms to chat. But somewhere along the way nagkaroon ng mahabang maintenance yung platform and we have to find a way to continue our enjoyment and bonding kaya may nag suggest ng Skype app. We used it habang hindi pa naaayos ang maintenance. That's the first time I discover Skype.

Bago pa man sumikat ang Zoom at Messenger video calls, Skype ang original na bida. Lalo na para sa mga OFWs na gustong makita ang kanilang pamilya, Skype ang naging tulay. Sa mga LDR (long-distance relationships), ito ang naging daan para manatiling konektado.

But sadly, Skype is saying goodbye, this May 2025.

According to Microsoft, Skype will officially be retired and fully integrated into Microsoft Teams. The decision came dahil mas maraming gumagamit ng Teams, lalo na sa work and education. At sa panahon ngayon, maraming apps ang mas mabilis, mas integrated, at mas user-friendly na. So, Skype is moving on to the hall of fame of digital communication. It's time to rest our special Skype memories with our loved ones.

Parang déjà vu ito – Yahoo Messenger, na paborito rin nating lahat noong 2000s, ay nagpaalam na rin noong 2018. Katulad ng Yahoo Messenger, Skype ay naging parte ng digital childhood and early adult life ng marami sa atin. Pareho silang nagbigay daan sa mas modernong communication tools, pero may nostalgia pa rin kapag naririnig ang pangalan nila.

Hindi ka lang basta app. Isa kang bahagi ng pamilya, kaibigan sa kalungkutan, at tulay sa malalayong distansya. Salamat sa mga pagmamarites safely, tawa, luha, at alaala.
