Alitagtag, Batangas Etymology

Alitagtag, officially the Municipality of Alitagtag (Tagalog: Bayan ng Alitagtag), is a municipality in the province of Batangas, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 26,819 people. Alitagtag derived its name from the Tagalog word alinagnag, which means "a small distinct light."

Indeed, the growth of a parish depends not on the single work of a person but on the collective effort and generosity of all parishioners. It has been five years since the parish of Alitagtag started rebuilding Christ’s body- the Invencion de la Santa. Cruz Parish. According to an inspection made in the previous years, the foundation of the old church of Alitagtag was already weak, and therefore, this calls for a total reconstruction of the church. In January 2009, the old church was destroyed to begin the construction. It is also significant to mention the following priests who served the parish and exerted their best efforts in constructing the new church: Rev. Fr. Ramonsito Manalo, Rev. Fr. Chito Andal, and Rev. Fr. Eleuterio Ramos. At present, it is in the process of construction with Rev. Fr. Marcelino Antonio Maralit, Jr. as the parish priest.

The town is notable for being the original location where a replica of the True Cross was erected in the early Spanish colonial period.
