Barcelona, Sorsogon Etymology

The site of Barcelona was originally part of Gubat and Bulusan. The town's name was known as Danlog, taken from the name of a local river. The change of name to Barcelona was recommended by a Spanish official who saw some similarities with Barcelona, Catalonia (Spain). On April 16, 1886, it became a pueblo civil.

St. Joseph Parish Church is located in Barcelona, Sorsogon. The place was called Barcelona because homesick Spaniards found its topography similar to Barcelona in Spain. A charming town known for the century-old Barcelona Church dedicated to St. Joseph, considered one of Bicol region’s oldest churches.

Built in 1874 by a Spanish friar from the Franciscan order, it is perhaps the most well-preserved church in the entire province. It was constructed with slabs of stone taken from the sea and put together using egg whites mixed with lime and tuba (coconut wine). Though it has already gone through some restorations, the original walls, including the bell tower, are still relatively intact.
