Calatagan, Batangas Etymology

The word Calatagan is taken from the Tagalog word latag and is closely associated with kapatagan, meaning a vast portion of flat land between the hills and mountains. Thus, Calatagan means a large expanse of vast flat land.

Church in Town: 𝐒𝐭𝐨 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐨 𝐝𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐬


The center of the town was the church, Santo Domingo de Silos Parish Church built in 1913. Despite the major developments from a province to a semi-city and, as they say, into a future city, the people of Calatagan never forget to thank God for the wonderful opportunities they have received in their everyday lives.

The town is the site of the historically and archeologically famous Calatagan Excavation, whose antique pottery and other utensils contributed important facts about the culture and activities of the Filipinas before the coming of the Spaniards.
