Dupax came from the Isinay word “Dopaj,” which means 'to lie down in complete relaxation.
The site of what eventually became the “poblacion” used to serve as a roaring camp for primitive hunters from surrounding tribal settlements. When the Spaniards arrived, the town was called Dupax.
In 1971, Congress passed into law RA 6372, creating the Municipality of Dupax del Norte, sponsored by Congressman Benjamin B. Perez and Senator Leonardo B. Perez. To implement its provisions, President Ferdinand E. Marcos promulgated P.D. 586 on November 6, 1974, which virtually paved the way for dividing the town of Dupax into two: Dupax del Norte and Dupax del Sur. It could be said that the division of Dupax has had some historical basis.
As early as 1725, the Municipality of Dupax was said to be inhabited by two tribes, the Malaats and the Caraos. The Malaats, led by a Chieftain named Dayag, occupied an area which is known as Parai in Dupax del Norte, and the Caraos, led by Chieftain Tiyum Pising, lived with the Isinays in Dupax del Sur.

The Administration of the mission in Malasin and other barangays of Dupax Del Norte was under the CICM missionaries who were assigned in the parish of Dupax del sur. By the year 1960, a chapel was built in Malasin through Fr. Theo Bonarius, the then parish priest of Dupax del Sur.
The mission in Malasin became difficult to administer because of the growing number of believers and other parochial responsibilities. Thus, in 1979, the mission was separated from Dupax del Sur and was made an independent parish. Fr. Staf Lambrechts CICM was installed as its first parish priest. He was succeeded by Fr. Jeff Tonnelier CICM, who built and situated the main church in Malasin with Sta. Ana was chosen as the patron saint of this newly established parish.
In 1990, the CICM missionaries ended their zealous work in the parish. The administration of the parish was handed to the diocesan clergy with Fr. Nereo Agoloos installed as the first diocesan priest. Fr. Nereo and the other diocesan priests who succeeded him were able to guide and shepherd the faithful. The barrios were given chapels to house the increasing number of believers. They organized and strengthened the different ministries and apostolates of the parish. With such industry, they endeavored to stabilize and develop the faith of the faithful as well as the administration of the parish.

The town of Dupax was first discovered by Luis Pérez Dasmariñas in 1591. Eighteen years later, the mission was established by the Dominicans but was later abandoned due to territorial disputes with the Franciscans. Colonization seemed difficult for decades.
