According to Miguel de Loarca, the Spaniards named the town Minalagua. Minalagua is a combination of two Spanish words meaning “mine of water.” These Spanish words were brought and used by the early foreign settlers in the archipelago, according to Alejandro Roces. Minalabac even had its version of the fluvial procession, which was more spectacular than the Penafrancia fluvial procession of Naga City. However, the Penafrancia festival is now considered the most popular in the Bicol Region.

Sts. Philip and James the Less Church is a Roman Catholic church located in San Felipe-Santiago, Minalabac, Camarines Sur, Philippines.
The name of the town is purportedly derived from a word of similar spelling that means to one that’s spread out (minalabag) or build-up of mud (mina, labag). It is traced to the time when the settlement was deposited with sediments whenever the river overflowed. The church was established in 1583.
The statues of the patrons flank the three-doorway entrance that is shaded by an overhang and embellished with engaged columns and pilasters. Above is a series of slit arch windows decorated with blind arches. The pediment is a space, and at its peak is a symbol and a cross decorated with volutes.

During the Philippine-American War, Minalabac witnessed the last sporadic battles fought by the native groups at sea. Well-equipped Yankees under Jorge Curry fought the leadership of the Bicolano General Ludovico Arejola in the barrios of Taban, San Jose, and Sitio Alibayod.
