Imus, Cavite Etymology

There are four origins where the word Imus came from:

1. Tagalog word "Imus" - a piece of land cutting into the junction of two rivers. The old location of the church is in Toclong, where the confluence of Imus River and Julian River is located, forming a slice of land.

2. "Imus" originated from the Latin word "infimus," meaning lowland.

3. "Imus" is derived from the word "centimos," the smallest unit of metal currency during the Spanish Colonial Era. During that era, a detachment of Spanish soldiers was stationed at the Recollect estate house, and after they left, a few natives scrounged the place for articles left behind. They found several centimo coins and went away exclaiming in utter delight, "Centimos! Centimos!"

4. A young mother crooning her child to sleep with a plaintive Tagalog ditty called "limos." A group of Spanish soldiers, who had gone there for the first time, asked her for the name of the place, and the woman, thinking that they were asking her the name of the song, answered, "limos." The Spaniards went away, muttering the last syllable, "imus."

Founded in 1795 as a Parochial Church by the Augustinian Recollect priests under the patronage of Nuestra Señora del Pilar (Our Lady of the Pillar) and St. John the Baptist, and by the administration of Fr. Francisco de Santiago, OAR, as its first Parish Priest.

In 1823, the church was moved from Toclong to Balangon (present-day Imus Town Proper), where it stands now.

The present church is made of stone and bricks and was built under Fr. Nicolas Becerra, OAR, who served from 1821 to 1840. The church was administered by Secular priests in 1897. On November 25, 1961, the birth of the Diocese of Imus, the church was declared a Cathedral and the Seat of the Diocese of Imus. It became the Mother Church of the Province of Cavite, with Nuestra Señora del Pilar as the Titular Patroness Saint of the Diocese of Imus and of the whole Province of Cavite.
