Ivisan, Capiz Etymology

The people, together with the Spanish Officials, aware of the fact that the place was famous for “Ibis”, unanimously deemed it right and proper to call it Ibisan”. Officially, however, the Spaniards called it “Ivisan” because they preferred the letter V over B.

St. Nicholas of Tolentino Church is a Roman Catholic church located in Ivisan, Capiz, Philippines.

The church began as a visita of Panay Parish and later of Capiz Parish (present-day Roxas Cathedral) beginning in 1707. The town, which was named after a small fish called an ibis, was organized in 1815, but it took decades for the church to separate from Capiz. Finally, it became a parish on January 6, 1849.

An early church was built of bricks and limestone, but it was torn down. Another one was constructed beginning in 1892. Church-building was interrupted by the Philippine Revolution, and it resumed in 1902 upon the initiative of Capitan Hipolito Vidal.

The church facade is built with its portico extending into the bell tower. A decorative band tapers to a cross, and upon its face is the niche of the patron and a slender outline of a crucifix. The entrance is flanked by walls of dissimilar surface treatments: the inner ones are rendered in gray concrete, and the outer walls contain sawtooth-like indentations.
