Established in the thirteenth century, the town's name was acquired accidentally. Thinking that the Spaniards came to ask the route along the river, the native answered “Makato,” which meant “that way”. The Spaniards recorded the name Makato in 1800, thinking it was the town's name.

The settlement in Makato is by the banks of the Tigao River. It was organized into a town in 1798, with Jose Laurente serving as its head starting in 1800. During the American period, it annexed Tangalan and renamed it Taft after William Howard Taft in accordance with Act No. 720 on April 4, 1903. Its original name, Makato, was restored through Act No. 2684 on March 8, 1917. Afterwards, Tangalan seceded and became an independent town through Republic Act No. 285 on June 16, 1948. The church was established in 1834.
