Mambajao, Camiguin Etymology

Mambajao became a town in 1855. The name was coined from the Visayan terms "mama-haw," meaning to usher in breakfast, and "bajao," which refers to leftover boiled rice.

Camiguin is among my favorites in the provinces Iโ€™ve visited so far around the Philippines. I like it for being remote and unique. Life there is serene and seemingly simple. With many natural wonders as tourist attractions to boot. An interesting note about Camiguin is that it is in Mindanao, and yet the people there are widely Catholic. Hence, some parishes are present in the island province.

In the capital town of Mambajao, you will find the San Nicolas De Tolentino Parish. It is a large church for a somewhat quiet town. Unlike most of the beautiful churches Iโ€™ve seen, this one is not about ornate religious art, classic architecture, or history and heritage. I think the simplicity of it is the essence of its beauty.

From the outside, the faรงade and structure stand proud and stern. On the inside, a few details noticeably give it much character. One is the stained glass windows at the front of the church. It gives the church a dash of vibrancy and colour. The other is the black and white checkered tile flooring, which I find very charming.

The San Nicolas De Tolentino parish was founded in 1916 and celebrates its feast on September 10th. A visit to the province of Camiguin is not complete if you donโ€™t take time to drop by this church.

When Camiguin Island was elevated to a province by Republic Act 4669, Mambajao became its capital town. The abaca industry boomed after the May 1, 1871, eruption of Mt. Vulcan that later paved Mambajao to become an abaca port in Northern Mindanao.
