The name of the parish was adopted from the name of a medieval city in Southern Spain, particularly situated at the bank of a river known as the Rio de Villaviciosa. The parish, which had 3,900 people, had its patron saint, Saint Lawrence.

One of the most significant historical milestones was when Emperor Charles I of Spain and V of Germany stayed in Villaviciosa in 1517 after landing in Tazones โ the first time he set foot in Spain. A remembrance party is still held in Villaviciosa to this day.
